ACK St. Barnabas Olepolos Church is a testament to the power of vision and faith, tracing its roots back to 1984 when lay readers, Mr. John Karanja Waweru and the late Jeremiah Mugo, envisioned a place of worship in the Olepolos area. Their vision was driven by a deep desire to propagate the gospel, serve the community, and provide a spiritual home for those who had to travel long distances to attend church services, particularly during the rainy seasons. In 1993, with determination and divine guidance, they found a space to start their worship in the home of Mr. Francis Suagei Kusero, converting their sitting room into a humble church. The congregation's first service in that room drew 24 members, young and old, with two children baptized. As their numbers grew, they transitioned to a larger rented space at Mr. Peter Karanja's, thanks to the generosity of Mr. George King'eru and John Karanja Waweru, who covered the rent for an entire year. Recognizing the need for a permanent place of worship, the congregation embarked on fundraising efforts in December 1994 and raised Kshs200,000. Through providence, Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Mugo made a significant contribution by selling the plot where the church now stands, and the congregation acquired the title deed. With dedication, they moved into a rental house in August 1995, laying the foundation for the construction of St. Barnabas Church. The journey continued with the support of community leaders, including the then Bishop of the Diocese of Mt. Kenya South, the right Rev. Peter Njenga Kariuki, and even the former Vice President of Kenya, Prof. George Saitoti, who visited and contributed to the cause. In 1999, Olepolos Parish was established, with Captain Jason Minae as the first vicar. The church thrived, and a sister church, St. Marks, Oloolua, was founded. Notably, the Most Rev. Dr. David Mukuba Gitari, A.C.K Archbishop, visited in the same year, leaving an indelible mark on the congregation. Through unwavering support, including the sale of the rental houses by Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Mugo, and the appointment of dedicated lay readers, the church persevered. In June 2011, St. Barnabas, Olepolos, was consecrated by the then Diocesan Bishop The Rt. Rev. Timothy Ranji in the presence of Rev. Leah Minae who was the vicar at that time, marking a significant milestone in its growth. Today, with over 340 members, St. Barnabas ACK Church stands as a shining example of faith, determination, and community spirit, demonstrating that when a vision is guided by faith, miracles can be achieved.
